If you’re familiar with Japanese desserts, then you must have come across Fruit Sando before. While Fruits Sando (or Fruit Sandwich) is technically a sandwich, it is considered to be a dessert in Japan.

Fruits such as strawberries, kiwis, oranges, bananas, and grapes are covered in a lightly sweetened whipped cream and are sandwiched between two slices of shokupan. The combination of fruits and whipped cream inside of a sandwich may sound a bit strange, but once you try it, you’ll understand why it is such a popular Japanese sweet treat.

Fruit sando can be found in bakeries, specialty shops, supermarkets, and even convenience stores, but they can also easily be made at home too. When making fruit sando at home, it’s important to use high-quality ingredients. Make sure to use fruits that are ripe and sweet because they will make the sandwich easier to eat.   • 2 Pieces of Sliced Shokupan (1-2cm thick)
  • 1 Strawberry
  • Half of a Kiwi
  • Half of an Orange
  • 100ml Fresh Cream
  • 1 Tbsp Honey or Sugar

How To Make Japanese Fruit Sandwich (Fruit Sando) At Home

The kind of bread you use when making a fruit sandwich will make a big difference in taste. Since the ingredients in fruit sandwich are so simple, it is important to use as high-quality ingredients as possible. If you don't have access to shokupan from a Japanese grocery store or bakery, why not try making it at home? 

By using this shokupan bread mold, you can make bakery-quality Japanese shokupan at home! This pan is also coated with quality Teflon, meaning that it will last much longer than other bread molds if well taken care of. 

Instructions

1) Gathering the Ingredients

Gather the ingredients together.

Note: For our fruit sandwiches, we are using strawberry, kiwi, and orange, but feel free to use your favorite fruits. Bananas and grapes are also popular choices for fruit sandwiches.

2) Whipping the Cream

Add the cold fresh cream to a bowl and beat it on medium speed using an electric mixer. Once the cream reaches soft peaks, sweeten it with honey or sugar

3) Preparing the Shokupan and Fruits

Cut the crusts off of the shokupan. Peel the kiwi and orange, and cut the stem off of the strawberry. Dry the fruits on a piece of paper towel.

Note: The crust is commonly cut off for most Japanese sandwiches, including fruit sandwiches. However, feel free to leave the crust on if you wish.

4) Assembling the Fruit Sando

Lay a piece of shokupan down and then add whipped cream. Carefully place the fruits in a diagonal pattern on the bread and then cover them in another layer of whipped cream. If the fruits are not fitting well on the sandwich, you can always cut them to fit more evenly. Then, add the remaining whipped cream on top of the fruit and spread it across the sandwich's surface. Finally, cover the sandwich in a tight layer of plastic wrap and rest it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

5) Enjoying Your Fruit Sando

After 30 minutes, take it out of the refrigerator and cut the sandwich diagonally to reveal the beautiful fruit pattern. Now all that's left to do is enjoy! Serve this sandwich with a cup of coffee or tea for the ultimate snack or sweet treat.
