There’s nothing quite like seeing Kyoto in autumn, and my first ride on the Sagano Romantic Train made it unforgettable.

As the train winds along the Hozugawa River through Sagano and Arashiyama, forests, riverbanks, and hillsides burst into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. Strolling through Kyoto’s crisp autumn streets, surrounded by the aroma of grilled fish and other cozy street foods, makes the season even more surreal.

To help you plan your visit, this guide breaks down Kyoto’s best fall foliage spots, peak viewing dates, and essential travel tips so you can enjoy the perfect Kyoto autumn trip.

When is the Best Time to Catch Kyoto’s Fall Foliage

For the most vibrant mix of red, orange, and yellow foliage, late November to early December 2026 is expected to be a good period for autumn sightseeing in Kyoto. However, if your priority is the peak of Kyoto’s iconic red maple leaves, around December 11 is the date to keep in mind.

The timing can vary by location and elevation. Some temples, gardens, and mountain areas may reach peak color earlier or later than the citywide forecast.

Top 10 Stunning Fall Foliage Spots in Kyoto

As mentioned above, Kyoto’s most popular foliage destinations are expected to reach their peak between late November and early December. Autumn leaves typically remain colorful for around two to three weeks, so you may still enjoy beautiful scenery even if you visit before or after the forecast peak.
